The under keel clearance is the distance from the keel of the ship to the channel bottom.
The under keel clearance (abbreviated with UKC) is the distance from the keel of the ship to the channel bottom. This terms is used in several contexts indicating a measurement between the keel and an intervention level. In PROTIDE we distinguish two measurements:
- Gross keel clearance: distance between the keel of a motionless ship in motionless water and the intervention level for dredging (nautically guaranteed depth)
- Net keel clearance: gross keel clearance minus squat
